10 sleeps to go!

18 Mar 2015

Bears,

Only 10 sleeps to go until we crown the 2014-15 Bearlow winner. Who’s it going to be??? To get you thinking about it, let’s have a look at some of the main ‘contenders’…

The Defending Champ

Drady hasn’t reached the dizzying heights of 2013-14 this time around, but he has still led the way with the ball and given his winning margin last year, is every chance to go back-to-back. What’s working against him is the fickle nature of the Bears, as Drady found out during the LMS season, the Bears are quick to desert previous winners and not give them the votes they might deserve.

The other man with current Silverware

DB is the reigning LMS Bearlow holder and on the back of playing every single weekend during the season, is a hot chance to add more silverware to the collection. A consistent season will have him in the mix, but may lose votes from the bowlers given it seemed as though he dropped a catch off just about everyone this season (jokes…)

The ‘all-rounder’

Gregory ‘Watto’ Terrell currently has 1 Bearlow to his name, Shane Watson has 2 AB Medals to his name. Is this the year that GT draws level with his idol. Following a maiden PBCC hat-trick and some late season form with the bat, he’s in the mix. What’s working against him? Well, he, like his idol, did bugger all in the first half of the season.

The man with the Rocket Arm

Ads (aka Rankin) might seem somewhat of a smokey, but he produced a couple of solid performances in games where no-one stood out and that may just be enough to get him over of the line in what shapes as the closest Bearlow ever. He also created Bear history this season by giving away 4 overthrows after they had already run a 3, yep, he gave away a 7!

The man from across the dutch

Just like the Kiwis are threatening to steal the World Cup, our very own Azz may just steal the Bearlow this year. Whilst at times he was barely sighted during the season, he was a valuable contributor with bat, ball and in the field when he did get on the park. The lack of games may cost him, but stranger things have happened.

The most famous calf in PBCC history

Had it not been for a particular calf injury, this discussion may well have been about predicting Pope’s winning margin. A phenomenal start to the season was derailed by injury, but the VC was that dominant early, he may just ‘Bradbury’ his way to victory.

The Smokeys…

Tijo – in his debut season with the Bears, Tijo quickly became one of the more popular Bears in the group and was quick to help out the team when we needed help. A characteristic that will always attract the votes. A few good performances with the ball may seem him sneak up the leaderboard as well.

Radico – not an outstanding year by Radico’s standards, but still a reasonable year by ‘Polar Bear’ standards. As with Drady, may find it difficult to attract votes given he is a previous winner

Gribbs – I think I’ve already used the line ‘stranger things have happened’… Gribbs took over from Pommy as chief BBQ-er this year with outstanding results as no Vomitrons were killed in 2014-15. Surely that will attract votes?

Spooner – hell no… well, if the Bearlow was decided over the last 2 weeks of the season, he’d be a chance, but we all know that he’s not in contention…

Armface – our resident #3 batsman also added wicket-taker to his repertoire in 2014-15. His mysterious disappearing act during the season may cost him votes in the final wash-up

Damo/Dropbear/Ohms all had one brilliant performance during the season. Given the season we’ve had, you just never know where that might put them.

Look forward to seeing you all at Armface’s place at Kambah on the 28th March, where we find out who is taking home the bacon.
